Required Software Standards

Standard Software and Operating Systems

For security reasons, software, upgrades, and patches on TSS-managed computers must be installed by an TSS employee. If a UF unit has approved an employee to manage their own computer, the unit has accepted responsibility for the increased risk of individually or jointly managed machines, and the individual employee has completed the appropriate security and compliance training, then the employee may install their own software and updates.

Except for prepaid UF-wide site licenses, such as the Microsoft Education Enrollment Solutions, units are required to purchase and track their own software licenses with TSS staff listed as the technical contact (please submit an TSS Help Request with the licensing information when requesting installation).

Please note that only software that is directly related to an employee's work duties should be installed on UF-owned computers.

Additional Software

Given the wide variety of work performed by units supported by TSS, a range of additional software may be needed by specific user groups or individual employees. Units may request the installation of this software, provided that the appropriate licensing fees have been paid.

TSS strongly advises units to purchase technical support contracts from vendors of custom and/or specialized software for advanced troubleshooting beyond the capabilities of TSS technical staff. TSS will ensure any supported computer is free of hardware, operating system, and network issues prior to the installation of custom bought software. If the custom software does not function as advertised, it is up to the unit who purchased the software to establish contact with the vendor’s technical support to begin advanced troubleshooting (a member of TSS can be present and on stand-by to assist while the vendor’s support agent is on the phone or on-site).

Please note that all non-standard software must be approved by the Office of Information Security via their Risk Assessment process.

Fast Path Solutions (FPS) is a pre-assessed catalog of software and computing environments, searchable by name or category. If your work involves data that's not classified or sensitive, you can freely use any item from FPS without needing more permissions from the UF's administrative, compliance, or risk management departments.

In the interests of security and network stability, TSS reserves the right to deny the installation of software that is not supported by a known company or entity.

Please note, that if an employee with administrative rights to their machine installs non-standard software, TSS can not guarantee support time to resolve issues with that software or resulting from the installation of that software.
